There is very little danger of your fork advertising you, or your spoon selling your data to the highest bidder. Using non-free software involves a ton of trust in the companies that produce them. Using free software without auditing it also involves trust, but less (because at least it's possible to audit!)

I should add that I don’t care at all about my data being sold (to the highest bidder or otherwise). I also have a personal policy of paying for subscriptions (ad-free when possible) when they’re available.

But if something changes and I have to switch then I have to switch.

Even if you pay for it, there's really nothing stopping closed source software from selling your data. Especially Saas offerings.
