It's the same, but I don't think it particularly helps to avoid a granny knot as that's determined by the orientation of the initial cross-over knot.

Yes, "Ian's secure knot".

"Ian's knot" is just the regular shoelace, done wrong - starting with a left-over-right twist, instead of right-over-left. So that knot will twist to vertical and self-loosen.
