He might as well come back if the entire board resigns and he gets to pick the new board and turn it into a C corp.

And then rename it ProfitAI, so as to satisfy all of the "Open" nay-sayers?

That would be the worst timeline. This shakeup has me 1% hopeful OpenAI will actually return to being a non-profit in spirit, not just name.

In all seriousness, FoundationAI sounds pretty good.

For lack there of, PsychohistoryAI it is!

RIP: AlignmentAI

what would the role and deliverable of the non-profit be though? so far they innovated, shipped fast, cut costs and sold plus subscriptions and dev apis for personal and enterprise use. and to be fair i really liked using their apis. so how would them being fully non-profit look like even? genuinely curious.

Agreed, but how will the investor class understand what to invest in?

Oh, I get it now, Foundation.ai

How exactly would that happen? It’s a non profit that owns a staggeringly valuable piece of IP.

Do you understand that this is conceptually the same thing as the directors of a public art museum deciding to just take millions of dollars of paintings for themselves?

A company owned by a nonprofit isn't that rare - big European companies like IKEA and Novo Nordisk did it. Of course, they did it for tax evasion.

How? The board appoint new members and resign. The new board votes to turn it into a C corp.
