I think Mazda would rather us pay for their subscription connected car service, which they’re currently piloting for free for everyone. It lets me start, lock, unlock and see fuel/tire pressure info for my 2021 CX-30. Remote start is great to have, but how many of us will pay ~$5/mo for the privilege?

Fewer than the number who would support regulation making this data available on a free and standard protocol.

A whole lot less once they realize that there was a free alternative that got killed.

Boomers aren’t going to live forever and younger generations pay attention to these things.

I wouldn’t buy a Mazda again based on this. I know it may not be oceans of people, but I used to really like Mazdas and am a former customer.

This isn't going to drive me away from Mazda, rather the Lexus prices. I know inflation is partially to blame, but if I am dropping $35-40k on a vehicle, I want it to be a luxury brand.

I don't think this was a free alternative; It was a library for the same APIs the official app would use. If they add a subscription model it would (almost) certainly be server-side and you'd still need to be an authorized user to use the API.

All they did was screw over existing owners / future subscribers.

I've found Mazda's connected car service to suck, generally.

1. No climate control, so remote start is largely useless.

2. Remote start ends if the car loses cell connectivity for even a moment. So starting the car in my driveway may fail two minutes in. So even if I could control the climate (or remembered to set it before I shut off the car the last time I drove), it wouldn't matter since the car may just shut off.

3. When you remote start and then get into the car, the engine just shuts off again, forcing you to immediately start it back up. This is annoying and must be terrible for the car.

4. I have to relogin to the app practically every time I use it.

So I would never pay for this.

Fair enough, I agree with everything. I’ve never had remote start before so I don’t know how the other OEMs do it. Climate control would be nice. I’ve had remote start straight up not work before, but I didn’t think it would be cell connectivity. I have Verizon (the Mazda uses Verizon too) and I’ve never driven anywhere without coverage so it might be a bug rather than cellular connectivity.
