3DFX was basically the shit in mid late 90s. First time seeing Quake in OpenGL was insane - before that all games were rendered in software.

Nope, the blitter engine on Amiga, tile engine on consoles like Nintendo and Sega, the early GPUs on arcades like TMS34010, glide on 3Dfx.

Quake used miniGL, not full OpenGL.

Quake had a Glide renderer. But those are examples on 2D acceleration. There were equivalents on PC too.
