I understand your point, but I don’t think anyone used the word “wokeness” before the Right started it as insult.

That sounds right to me, too. Five years ago someone of color could say to a white guy "if you're not down, you're at least woke" and mean it as a compliment. Not sure what the new way to say that would be.
