There are ton of hobby VPSes with a simple website, CMS, email server, or maybe a Plex. Do you really think that these kind of scenarios should use a bastion host?

Since we're talking about a home network, definitely. Don't accept connections from public internet straight into your home unless you're OK with the consequences of that.
