For some reason this reminds me of the Coke/New Coke fiasco, which ended up popularizing Coke Classic more than ever before.

I tried New Coke when it was re-released for Stranger Things. It really is a lot better than Coca Cola Classic. It's a shame that it failed.

I would have guessed the stunt was to hide the switch from sugar to High Fructose Corn syrup.
