the climate thing is pretty important but at this point manageable

financial crises come and go; the one 15 years ago was interesting but not, as it turned out, a second great depression

ukraine was one of the major topics of the note i linked, though not explicitly mentioned

covid i'm not sure about. you would expect 6.98 million confirmed deaths (and several times that many total deaths) to have a cultural impact like aids or the holocaust, but if it has, i am not sure exactly what that impact is. i don't even see people wearing face masks on the bus when they have a cold, which is sort of the minimum i was hoping for

For humanity as a whole: yes. For individuals who happen to live in the wrong spot: not so much.

Maybe societies are like people in that sense: that they adapt to certain kinds of illnesses and at some point they are no longer quite as susceptible as they were the first time? After all, capitalism itself was tested for the very first time then and it did survive and what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Ok.

If there ever was a wake-up call that should have been it.

But it's like as if it never happened and as if it has definitively ended and nothing like it can ever happen again. Weirdest experience in my life to date.

Not hoping for a re-match.
