I'm going to throw the theory out there that Sam leaked/sold the full GPT models to Microsoft (or another competitor).

A lot of other theories don't match because the board was in an extreme hurry to get him out (voting him out in the middle of the night, not even waiting for markets to close to announce it), must have proof of serious misconduct and the need to immediately distance themselves from Sam (otherwise the language would not be as bridge-burning as it is) and a major financial or technical failure seems unlikely, since the CFO remains and the CTO was even promoted to interim CEO - they seem to be trusted, still, so it must have been something Sam did on his own.

Leaking/Selling the full models matches, as this would violate OpenAIs non-profit terms, would be something Sam could do without the C-Suite being implicated and (given the data contained in the training set) might even be legal hot water, justifying this drastic reaction and immediate distancing.

This can't be right -- Microsoft must already have GPT-4 weights, because they have an in-house fine tune to power Bing Creative.

Microsoft has had a contractual right to any of OpenAI’s GPT technologies since they first partnered.

It might be a Chinese company. Pure speculation but considering APEC...

They waited for the Friday news dump to make the announcement, not clear exactly how much of a hurry it was.

Given the other comments in this thread, this vote was very recent, with Sam apparently not knowing of the situation yesterday. They haven't even updated their website, this page still describes Sam as CEO: https://openai.com/our-structure

With this apparent rush, I'd habour the guess that the situation just happened to unfold on a Friday and wasn't planned as such.

Microsoft already has the GPT models, that's how Azure OpenAI is a thing from what I understand.

True, so it can't be this exact situation. Possibly he sold it including training data or gave access to another company? We'll see, but something in that direction still seems likely to me.

Beyond this: is it conceivable for Microsoft to enter an agreement of this scale without the due diligence that the board would be even remotely amenable?

If you do MBA 101 they literally teach you to disclose bad news on Friday, it was definitely planned.

What about Humane recently announced AI Pin. Sam has a good chunk of equity in that company.

Perhaps the board was not necessarily in a hurry but set it up to be swift, with Sam and even MS kept in the dark until the actual firing.

They are not a public company.

There's a 1/7 chance it just happened to be a Friday; probably closer to 1/5, given that these things tend to happen on workdays.

I get that this looks like a strange coincidence, but major shareholders just had minutes of warning and they released the news before market close, sending Microsofts stock crashing down. Had they had the time to wait until Friday, they would have had 30 more minutes. So unless they had some fun with shorts, this doesn't look like a planned out action at all.

MSFT is though, and it appears to have dipped almost 2% on the news.

True, but MSFT is a public company and appears to have been affected by this disclosure.
