One might think that Altman doesn't have a shot at this ham-fisted attempt at regulatory capture.

The issue is that the political class will view his suggestion, assuming they didn't give it to him in the first place (likely), through the lens of their own self-interest.

Self-interest will dictate whether or not sure-to-fail regulations will be applied.

If AI threatens the power of the political class, they will attempt to regulate it.

If the power of the political class continues to trend toward decline, then they will try literally anything to arrest that trend. Including regulating AI and much else.
