What I don't understand about the dismissals is that a "stochastic parrot" is a big deal in its own right — it's not like we've been living in a world with abundant and competent stochastic parrots, this is very obviously a new and different thing. We have entire industries and professions that are essentially stochastic parrotry.

That's not what I said. But, feel free to find some emergent properties or capability of total abstract reasoning and generalizing to data outside of its corpus that doesn't turn out to be a mirage of the wishes of the researchers.
