I think what really did it for me and my friends at that time was we could have a better graphics at home that what was available at most arcades at the time. Need for Speed 3 was the killer app for us, Playing over a DB9 serial link or directly calling each others house (and arguing about who was going to call who because the ringers were still on in the parents bedroom and the pickup was after the 1st ring).
