I get the rage, but honestly, could have OpenAI reach its goals, this product, if it stayed non-profit? If it wouldn't have gotten this money? How much capital, progress did it have before and after switching the status? The article says directly that they got 1B from Microsoft right after the change.

Every previous OpenAI thread on HN is filled how expensive is it to train and run these models, yet we somehow expect that this money comes out of thin air? Why would someone - including governments, foundations, grants - finance such research before other endeavours when it costs this much, the outcome and its effects are so unpredictable, the chance of misuse so high?

It couldn't have, they've mentioned before the change in business model was out of neccessity. I don't think they wouldn've signed away so much of their rights if they didn't really need that azure hardware either.
