Curious, why not Digital Ocean? Which is a YC investment? I get why you choose AWS on a technical basis, but wouldn't it make sense to give the business to Digital Ocean to help their brand?

Pretty sure Digital Ocean is not a YC-funded startup.

We wouldn't make HN decisions on that basis anyhow, though, I don't think. Maybe if all other things were literally equal.

Who are the people that use HN and would notice it moved hosting, but haven’t heard of Digital Ocean?

Digital Ocean recently ended their support for FreeBSD, and HN runs on FreeBSD (at least at M5), and while you don't really need to run an OS your vm provider supports, it's kind of nice.
