What was the reason for wanting to merge? Change is breakage for someone so their ought to be a reason to do it, rather that a reason not to.

We _could_ all decide to drive on the otherside of the road, if the other side is better, but you have to incorporate the cost of the change.

Simplicity is reason enough to change something.

When things break because of reasonable change, they can be fixed. And in this case, backwards compatibility can be ensured simply by symlinking things.
