Well, they haven't done that since what, the early XX century, what with "he may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch"? If the US really cared that much about "democracy", perhaps they'd have by now sorted it out in, say, Mexico already: after all, that's their closest-connected country after Canada, right? Yet the last time I've checked the news about upcoming Mexican elections, there were quite a lot of dead/missing opposition candidates reported (just as it was during the previous elections, and pre-previous, and...) Interestingly enough, the US press doesn't report much on that: apparently things in Afghanistan, across half the globe, are much more important for home security.
