I get your point, but so far science has been a huge net positive:

    - electricity (cellphone towers, refrigerators)
    - food technology (producing food efficiently)
    - medicine (vaccines, hospitals)
    - hygiene (sewer system, clean water)
have allowed us in the last five centuries to raise humanity from '99% being starved', to 'largely prosperous and improving fast'.
