One thing I have found is having basically a PoV character to follow through history is really useful for learning the period. Maybe its the game of thrones in me :)

If you're looking for a great book like this, I cannot possibly recommend anything higher than Edmund Morris' The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. Morris' writing is masterful and gripping. It seriously reads like an adventure novel.
