I just finished building a DIY word clock (
https://bitbucket.org/sjoerdtimmer/wordclock/), which indicates time by lighting LEDs behind a laser cut stencil with letters, producing text like "IT IS A QUARTER PAST SIX". The display only updates every five minutes, calmly fading between word combinations. It is one of the least obtrusive technologies that I have!
