3DFX was basically the shit in mid late 90s. First time seeing Quake in OpenGL was insane - before that all games were rendered in software.

Nope, the blitter engine on Amiga, tile engine on consoles like Nintendo and Sega, the early GPUs on arcades like TMS34010, glide on 3Dfx.

Quake used miniGL, not full OpenGL.

I guess they're specifically referring to textured polygon-based 3D graphics.

There were a few earlier attempts that failed for one reason or another, mostly poor performance. I think there was a French accelerator card that I can't remember the name of right now.
