I suppose I entered this industry as one of many thrown onto some project and I just happened to be good at what I was doing. But what was more important for my promotions ended up being my ability to work with and train others to do what I was doing, to scale the operations of the business and effectively communicate intent, ideas, and solutions to problems. I attribute this partially to my background in the humanities, and partially to things I learned growing up, in various positions before the one I have now, where I was forced to learn how to work with others in just this way. No matter what, nobody succeeds in any industry without excellent interpersonal skills or at least a bit of cunning. Its very sad to me, as when I was younger I was very idealistic and I wanted to change the world, that’s where I learned to marshall others to support a cause; now, I marshall them to hit project goals. Its all the same, “But where the danger is, also grows the saving power.” (Hölderlin)
