I don't understand how the invisibility makes it "easier" for people who aren't Google or GMS subscribers. You could have exactly the same workflow and merge structure and still let the commits be public.
It sounds like corporate bullshit for "better for us but we don't want to say it that way so we'll veil it with a euphemism."
