As a Brazilian, it's pretty weird when I see that countries like UK or the U.S don't have national IDs.

Here that would be seen as a completely insane.

I didn't even mention crime. Not sure why this question.

Obviously it doesn't stop all crimes, probably helps on some.

Just saying how there is a very different culture, where no one see having an ID as something weird and invasive.
