Great question, answered in section 4.1.5 of the paper (page 6): it turns out that the single character | is already used for bitwise OR, and although that's rarely used and in
most cases there would be no confusion, there are at least a few cases, and at this time, “More drastic solutions requiring users to migrate queries did not seem desirable.”
