It is easy to point to loopy theories around superalignment, p(doom), etc. But you don't have to be hopped up on sci-fi to oppose something like GPT-4o. Low-latency response time is fine. The faking of emotions and overt references to Her (along with the suspiciously-timed relaxation of pornographic generations) are not fine. I suspect Altman/Brockman/Murati intended for this thing to be dangerous for mentally unwell users, using the exact same logic as tobacco companies.

The use of LLM's as pseudo-friends or girlfriends for people as a market solution for loneliness is so incredibly sad and dystopian. Genuinely one of the most unsettling goddamn things I've seen gain traction since I've been in this industry.

And so many otherwise perfectly normal products are now employing addiction mechanics to drive engagement, but somehow this one is just even further over the line for me in a way I can't articulate. I'm so sick of startups taking advantage of people. So, so fucking gross.

It's a technological salve that gives individuals a minor and imperfect remedy for a profound failure in modern society. It's of a kind with pharmaceutical treatments for depression or anxiety or obesity -- best seen as a temporary "bridge" towards wellness (achieved, perhaps, through other interventions) -- but altogether just trying to help troubled individuals navigate a society that failed to enable their deeper wellness in the first place.
