The word grift has been diminished to polarized meaninglessness. The linked piece defines it as-

"So the heart of a grift is that you get something that, in a technical sense, is what you paid for, but that is also not worth what you paid for it."

This arguably makes literally every transaction a grift through some lens.

And none of this is new.

Not all transactions are grifts, because frequently something for sale will have different values to the buyer and seller. Things aren't strictly worth what you can sell them for, unless the only thing you want to do with the thing is to sell it.
