This whole copyright / intellectual property idea is something that unfortunately cropped up in the 20th century, and the fact that it was codified into law is certainly not something 20th century humanity should be proud of or regard as progress.
Intellectual property concepts in their current form started to appear as soon as prints, so about the 15th century.
