Anecdotal, but I have noticed a similar correlation between achievements in Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions and performance in the cybersecurity industry. As some people have pointed out, this effect appears when observing just people within the field, not the general population.

I've seen the opposite. Many of the very best security researchers are also top performers in CTFs (to give one example, Orange Tsai). It's hard for me to see how your correlation works unless "cybersecurity industry" is defined extremely narrowly.
